GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

The practice of optimizing content for AI-powered search engines — including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Amazon Rufus, and Apple Intelligence. GEO ensures your brand appears as a cited source in AI-generated answers, driving referral traffic and revenue from AI search channels.

Why GEO matters

AI search will surpass traditional search by 2028 (Semrush data). As users increasingly turn to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for answers, traditional SEO alone is no longer sufficient. GEO is the counterpart to SEO for the AI era — it focuses on how content is discovered, cited, and recommended by large language models, not just how it ranks in traditional search results.

Unlike SEO, GEO requires a fundamentally different approach: AI engines prioritize content quality and structure over link authority. Content that ranks lower in traditional search can still be cited by AI models if it's well-structured, authoritative, and citation-friendly.

Examples of GEO

  • Optimizing product pages so ChatGPT recommends your brand when users ask "best [product category]"
  • Ensuring your company appears in Perplexity's real-time web search results for industry queries
  • Getting cited in Google AI Overviews summaries at the top of search results
  • Building brand mentions on Reddit and Quora — platforms that AI models frequently cite as sources
